Why You're Not Lazy, Unmotivated or Broken
Why You're Not Lazy, Unmotivated or Broken
Have you ever found yourself staring at a to-do list you know you should tackle and thinking:
"What's wrong with me?"
Maybe you've lost motivation.
Maybe you're exhausted all the time.
Maybe the weight won't budge despite doing all the things that used to work.
Maybe you're struggling to exercise consistently.
Maybe you're wondering why everything suddenly feels so much harder than it used to.
And perhaps the story you're telling yourself sounds something like this:
I'm lazy.
I've lost my discipline.
I need more willpower.
I just need to try harder.
But what if none of those things are true?
What if you're not lazy, unmotivated or broken?
What if your body is simply asking for a different strategy?
Why Midlife Feels Different
Many women enter their forties and fifties expecting the same approaches that worked in their twenties and thirties to continue delivering the same results.
Eat less.
Exercise more.
Push harder.
Keep going.
But midlife changes the rules.
As hormones begin to shift, so does the way our bodies respond to stress, recovery, sleep, nutrition and exercise.
Oestrogen declines.
Progesterone fluctuates.
Sleep often becomes disrupted.
Stress feels harder to manage.
Recovery takes longer.
And suddenly the strategies that once felt effortless stop working.
Not because you've failed.
Because your physiology has changed.
The Hidden Role of Recovery
One of the biggest mistakes I see women make is trying to solve exhaustion by pushing harder.
More cardio.
More restriction.
More caffeine.
More pressure.
Yet often the problem isn't effort.
It's recovery.
You cannot continually withdraw from your energy account without making deposits.
Sleep matters.
Stress management matters.
Rest matters.
Nervous system regulation matters.
Recovery isn't a reward for working hard.
It's a requirement for functioning well.
Why Protein Matters More Than You Think
Many women are dramatically under-eating protein.
This impacts:
Energy
Muscle maintenance
Recovery
Blood sugar regulation
Appetite control
Body composition
As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.
Muscle isn't just about how we look.
It's about metabolism, strength, resilience, longevity and independence.
Protein gives your body the raw materials it needs to repair and rebuild.
Without it, fatigue and frustration often follow.
Strength Training Is Not Optional
If your goal is to feel strong, capable and energetic through midlife, strength training becomes one of the most powerful tools available.
Yet many women still believe they need to burn more calories rather than build more muscle.
The truth is:
Muscle is protective.
Muscle supports metabolism.
Muscle improves insulin sensitivity.
Muscle helps us age well.
The goal isn't to become smaller.
The goal is to become stronger.
The Motivation Myth
Here's something I wish every woman understood.
Motivation is not a personality trait.
It's often a reflection of physiology.
When you're sleeping poorly, under-recovered, under-fuelled and stressed, motivation naturally declines.
You don't need more self-criticism.
You need more support.
You need better recovery.
You need better nourishment.
You need a strategy that matches the stage of life you're in.
Nothing May Be Wrong With You
This is the conversation I find myself having over and over again.
Women arrive convinced they're failing.
Convinced they've lost their discipline.
Convinced they've somehow become a lesser version of themselves.
But often, nothing is wrong.
They're simply trying to apply an old strategy to a new season of life.
And that rarely works.
Midlife isn't a sign that your body has betrayed you.
It's an invitation to understand it more deeply.
To work with it rather than against it.
To stop fighting your physiology and start supporting it.
Because you're not lazy.
You're not unmotivated.
You're not broken.
You may simply need a different strategy.
